Who woulda thunk I'd do a "frugal" post?

So we bought gas today. No big whoop, right?

Yes, we paid just under 38 cents per gallon.

Seriously.

Check it out...we filled our minivan (I was running on fumes) for under six bucks:

It seems that our grocery store (Safeway) has some weird points thing...you spend money and accrue points. We've been accumulating points for ages. I had no idea.

The other week my husband was lucky enough to have a cashier who spent a few moments to explain just how valuable those points were. (*Warning, boring explanation ahead.) They are running a promotion...every "point" accumulated amounts to ten cents off per gallon of gas. We had thirteen points. That's $1.30 off the price of gas...so instead of 1.68 per gallon (which is already cRaZy cheap), we spent $0.379. Ummm...wow.

So anyway, when someone tells you it is too good to be true, don't believe them. It just might be that good. Or better.

  1. Holy cow! I have seen this point thing on our Safeway receipt but have never taken the time to figure out what it is all about. I guess I will now! Thanks for the frugal post.

  2. I think I need to talk our local stores into this. Forget turkey points. I need me some gas points!

  4. My grocery store has the same deal and I only really "got it" after one of the clerks explained it to me, too. She was like, "lady, you have had enough points for a FREE TANK OF GAS for the past month, why don't you use it?"

I was kind of nervous the first time I tried it. What if the pump rejected me and my free gas points or I screwed up the transaction? But it all worked out in the end.

  5. Wow, and I thought I was getting a good price the other day when I had 3 sets of points racked up and my price was 1.62/gallon! (and your gas is so much cheaper already it's not fair!)
Just so you know, at least around here those points are worthless at the end of every quarter. So everyone use them up before December 31st!

  6. Your "supermarket" story is very cute and all, but I think you are connected to the Mob.

  7. Safeway gave me some Arco gift card to put points on. But I think I only get points if I spend $100. And I think I get like 4 points, and that 1 point=1 sniff of gasoline. And I think I have to use the gift/point/screwyou card by January.

I can't buy enough groceries to even pay for the gas it would cost me to drive to the nearest Arco.

  8. Wow that is some crazy cheap gas! After you fill the tank do you accumulate points all over. How long does it take to get a point? I am totally intrigued. Not living in the states for 8 years I am completely oblivious to stuff like this but it sounds like a great investment. Safeway...interesting.

  9. Wow, way to put me in my place. I was all woo hoo when I used my unknown mystery Safeway points the other day and got 50-cents off per gallon, making the $1.75 gas $1.25. Heck, I'm still woo hoo about it.
